Presentation: How to preserve capital in a volatile world
Charlotte Yonge, manager of the Trojan Ethical Fund, at Troy Asset Management Limited, looks at the challenge of capital preservation given the current structural backdrop.
Equity valuations are currently high, implying prospective returns are likely to be lower from this starting point. In turn, heightened concerns around the sustainability of US government debt levels and rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe add further uncertainty. Whilst the bulk of the market believes a soft landing is likely, investors are exposed to potential downside risks if this does not materialise.
Avoiding trap doors by not investing in illiquid, overvalued corporate bonds, companies with weaker business models or alternative investments is crucial. Winning by not losing and being ready to take advantage when opportunities present themselves is core to this strategy.
