Presentation: Applying a due diligence framework to defence in assessing the value in global equity portfolios

• Most investors would agree the need for a strong defence program is essential for a stable global economy, however many ask about overall responsibility: what constitutes ethical defence investing? Should we still apply exclusions for certain weapons categories and where do we draw the line? What makes a 'good' defence company or a 'bad' defence company?
• The noise can often make objective and consistent implementation of company due diligence difficult, and it is therefore important to have a framework in place that supports the investment team in evaluating both risks and opportunities across defence‑related companies, feeding directly into valuation work, portfolio construction and engagement priorities.​
• In this cio investment club session, Alphinity will provide insights from the work the team completed last year in engaging with 60 of the top Global industrial companies to understand the key considerations in determining best practise in regard to defence, and ultimately whether a company should be considered investible.
• This work has allowed the team to put in place a pre-investment due diligence framework that can be used to consistently evaluate good governance practices, check for human rights concerns, and understand existing and potential conflict exposures.
